UN number of the year 2024A poisonous look back with a twinkle in the eye

The year 2024 is drawing to a close, and what could be more fitting than choosing a dangerous but instructive UN number? Our choice is UN 2024: Mercury compound, liquid, n.o.s. – a substance that impresses with its chemical properties and its status in dangerous goods legislation.

What makes UN 2024 so special?

  • Hazard number: 60
  • ADR class: 6.1 (Toxic substances)
  • Packing group: II, III

Mercury compounds, liquid and not otherwise specified (n.o.s.), are highly toxic and pose significant risks to both humans and the environment. Their vapors are invisible, heavier than air and spread along the ground – an invisible danger that can lurk in sewers or basements.

Special challenges UN 2024

Properties:

  • Toxic: Dangerous in contact, if swallowed or inhaled.
  • Non-flammable: Flash point above 60 °C.
  • Irritant: Eyes, skin and respiratory tract are highly endangered.

Measures for use:

  • Protection: Breathing apparatus, chemical protection suits and chemical-resistant clothing are mandatory.
  • Fighting: Close leaks, absorb liquid with absorbent materials, retain extinguishing agent.

Global events in 2024 - a challenging year

While the complex characteristics of UN 2024 present an impressive challenge in dangerous goods management, the global political and economic environment in 2024 also presented numerous serious hurdles that required global attention and decisive action.

Political upheavals

Germany:

The dissolution of the traffic light coalition led to political turmoil and new elections in February 2025.

USA:

The re-election of Donald Trump as US President caused discussion and uncertainty around the world.

Crises and conflicts:

War in Ukraine:

The ongoing conflict continued to demand international attention and humanitarian aid. Middle East conflict: Tensions over Israel escalated again, accompanied by military clashes.

Syria:

The ongoing uncertainties following the fall of the Assad regime and the complex geopolitical situation are leading to a dynamic situation that is difficult to predict.

Worldwide and Europe:

Economic growth:

The European economy recorded moderate growth of 1.0%, while the eurozone recorded growth of 0.8%.

Inflation:

After peaking in 2022, inflation in the EU fell significantly and is expected to fall to 2.7% this year and to 2.2% in 2025.c

Germany specific:

Gross domestic product (GDP):

The German economy stagnated, with a forecast decline in price-adjusted GDP of 0.1% compared to the previous year.

Automotive industry:

The sector recorded a 4.7% decline in turnover in the first half of 2024 (excluding the supplier industry) compared to the previous year, but remains the industry with the highest turnover, accounting for a quarter of total industry turnover. Even worse figures are expected for the second half of the year.
