For a long time, lithium batteries have been a popular power source for various electronic devices, from cell phones to electric vehicles. However, lithium batteries are also associated with various risks, especially during transportation. To ensure that these risks are minimized, special regulations for the transport of lithium batteries have been included in the ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road).
Standard size and no more customization
One of the most important changes in ADR 2023 concerns the marking of lithium batteries. The indication of the telephone number on the marking for lithium batteries in paragraph 5.2.1.9.2, ADR special provision 188 is repealed. In addition, the minimum dimension for marking lithium batteries has been reduced to 100x100mm.
120x110mm & custom phone number
Previously, a telephone number had to be listed on the marking of lithium batteries to allow contact in the event of an incident during transport. However, this requirement has been removed. In addition, the minimum size at the time was 120x110mm.
Cheaper in production, purchasing, storage
The new minimum size for marking lithium batteries has been standardized at 100x100mm to harmonize it with other markings for dangerous goods, such as hazard labels, which have long been set at a size of 100x100mm. Previously, the minimum size for marking lithium batteries was 120x110mm.
Overall, the changes in ADR 2023 regarding the marking of lithium batteries are a step in the right direction to make the transport of dangerous goods easier. However, it is important that all stakeholders continue to work together to ensure that all regulations are met and that safety is maintained during transport.
